Planning - Front cover (behind the scenes)

Image
This is the behind the scenes for my magazine front cover page. I wanted to have a white mise en scene so a white screen was needed. After setting up the white screen I found an issue was that there were obvious creases visible on camera. To solve this problem I ironed out the obvious creases, which in return resulted in a much better and professional picture. When it came to lighting, I used two light stands, with one facing the wall which created a shadow effect on the side of the model’s face. When taking the photo I also found an issue was that when the model was stood up I had to be far away from the screen to take the photo, which overall didn’t look as pleasing. However, I found when the model went on their knees I could go closer and it looked a lot better. It also allowed me to focus on the upper body muscles.

Planning - Masthead font experimentation

Image
Here I am experimenting the different fonts I could use for my front cover masthead. I used the colour of blue I anticipate to use for the final masthead, which helped me decide whether certain fonts would suit the colour. I was instantly driven towards the second font down on the left side. A simplistic, mostly san serif font which signifies simplicity, modernism and an overall clean look. However on the letter 'Rs' we see a flick, which would be classed as a serif font, symbolising professionalism and a sign of experience. I like this contrast and think it will appeal to my target audience. When creating these masthead ideas, I noticed that if I position the word 'rep' underneath the word 'more' in the right position the 're' on both words sit directly on top of eachother. This signifies the idea of doing repetitions of an exercise in the gym with the repetiton of 're'. This works well with the topic of my magazine being about gym and overall...

Planning - Front cover final idea

Image
This is my updated magazine front cover. I changed the masthead to the new style and I much prefer it this way. I feel the masthead looks more pronounced and easier to read. I also get a sense of professionalism which I think will partner well with the colour blue. I also moved around the positions of the coverlines, making the coverline 'Know your protein!' the largest and boldest coverline as that is what my double page spread will be basec upon.

Planning - Front cover initial idea 2

Image
This is the updated magazine front cover. I added in the new masthead style which gave me more room to make the main image bigger, although, it does not look as appealing as I had anticipated. Although the style was interesting and outside the box, I feel it decreases the power of the masthead drastically and the word 'rep' almost looses all it's power. On reflection of this I will go for the top style on my most recent blog. I feel this will make the masthead a lot more powerful. Looking at the other parts of the magazine, I moved around the coverlines and the puff so they all fit on the magazine and are spaced out professinally. I also increased the size of the model which looks a lot more appealing and creates a fuller looking front cover.

Planning - Magazine front cover masthead styles

Image
After looking into my initial idea of what my front cover may look like, I decided to look into the style options I could choose from for my masthead. I sketched out the three styles I think would look best beside from the style on my initial ideas sketch. I focused on having the ‘rep’ part to the side so I could in result make the main image – the model, bigger. Out of the three, my favourite was by far the second style. I really like the way the word ‘rep’ is attached to the word ‘more’. I will agree that this style is not as professional as other styles I could have chosen, however due to my target audience being teenagers, they are more likely going to be drawn in by an interesting and creative style that by something professional and in my eyes – the eyes of a teenager, boring.

Planning - Initial magazine front cover ideas

Image
This is my initial idea of what my magazine front cover may look like. The strapline I chose to be ‘Train hard. Eat hard. Sleep hard’. I feel this is catchy and the repetition of hard gives the strapline power. I would look to make the strapline bold by using my knowledge of colour and fonts. For the masthead, I chose the name ‘One more rep’. I am aware lots of fitness magazines tend to follow similar direction when adding features to their front cover. It would be a san serif font as it signifies modernism and simplicity and in a royal blue colour, which symbolises trust, strength and independence. Although I have followed some direction, I wanted to be different with arguably one of the most powerful parts of a magazine front cover. I put the model in the centre of the front cover, however I will make him bigger to make it a more powerful aspect. This may result in me reconsidering the presentation of the masthead. My mise en scene will be a plain white background, which is similar...
