Preliminary Task/Planning - Interview plan

My interview will take place in Ogwen Mountain Rescue centre, Snowdonia. I will be interviewing Chris Lloyd, the chair of Ogwen Mountain Rescue. The interview will be based upon getting as much information as possible, so when it comes to editing the footage, I can pick out the best parts to put together. 

Script:
 • Who you are, when you joined the team + your current role
 • How much strain is Mountain Rescue under + why don’t they receive government support? 
 • Your first duty (what happened, what was the cause, how you felt, emotions) 
 • What is the most common type of rescue you are called out for?
 • What are the most challenging weather conditions or environments you face during a rescue operation?
 • How can accidents on the mountains be reduced?
 • What are the key safety tips you would give to anyone planning on getting out into the UK mountains?

Reflection - planning my interview has given me a secure structure for when the interview takes place. I feel more confident now I know what questions I am going to ask the interviewee (Chris Lloyd), as opposed to going in unprepared and wasting his time. By making it clear what questions I am going to ask, it ensures that everything Chris Lloyd says will be relevent to my production, reducing the chances of him talking about things that are around the same topic, yet not specific to my documentary.

By learning about each 'mode' of documentary, it has given me a variety of structures to choose from, that I can follow for my own production. I particularly like the sound of 'expository' documentaries, which involve interviews and deliver a clear message. If I was to a documentary about mountain safety, I could include interviews with Mountain Rescue members, to help deliver a clear message across. I also quite like 'observation' documentaries, which observe the truth and capture 'uninterrupted' footage. However, I am not sure how well that would work with a mountain safety documentary, as I doubt Mountain Rescue would let me film them doing a real rescue callout.

Critical Questions - Advanced

Critical Questions  How did your research inform your products and the way they use and challenge Conventions?   This essay is about my A2 coursework documentary, ‘Mountains Bite Back’. Documentary is a technique of showing a non-fictional plot to get an essential message or theme across to your target audience, being defined by John Grierson, who was known as the ‘Father of documentary’, as “the creative treatment of actuality”. My product follows the typical conventions such as drone footage, interviews and voiceovers, being an expository documentary. I took inspiration from David Attenborough’s ‘Planet Earth’, which allowed me to understand how these conventions are used correctly for a documentary of this nature.
