Planning - Documentary Pitch

Documentary pitch - The documentary I will be producing will be an expository documentary. It will cover issues regarding safety in the mountains (UK), with a supporting interview with mountain rescue, discussing any issues they face and how it can be resolved. I was inspired to do an expository documentary by famous documentaries such as ‘Our Planet’. I also noticed that there is a gap in the documentary market, being a documentary based primarily upon the issue regarding mountain safety and the issue mountain rescue face. My aim is to fill the gap in the market with my production. My target audience is anyone who shares an interest in the mountains and the outdoors. The target audience isn’t specific to the UK as safety issues in the mountains occur in many places around the world. The demographic of my target audience would most likely be a minimum of around 17-18, through to elder ages. I decided to include elder ages because even though they may not be climbing mountains or mountain biking, the issue of unprepared individuals going up local mountains, putting both themselves and the services at risk, can have an effect on them. I was inspired to do this topic as I have a large interest in mountaineering and regularly go out on the hills. I have become aware that an increasingly common issue is people hiking / climbing without sufficient / suitable equipment, resulting in injury or fatality. Consequently, this is putting Mountain Rescue, a voluntary service, under serious pressure. I hold compassion towards this issue and feel it needs to be shared with others. The documentary will include footage of mountains (Wales) and a section of filming around a Mountain Rescue HQ in Snowdonia. The documentary will also contain an interview with a mountain rescue volunteer, discussing the issues / pressures Mountain Rescue face and how they can be resolved. I will choose to upload my documentary to YouTube because it can reach a large audience and it is free to upload.

Reflection (13/03/25): after the completiton of my final product, the content mentioned in the pitch stands mostly true. My production covers the issue regarding mountain safety. My production contains mountain footage, shot on a drone (filmed myself), which was filmed in Wales. My production contains extensive interview footage with a current Mountain Rescue member (Chris Lloyd), which runs through the majority of it. The interviewee talks about the issue in detail, and suggests ways it can be resolved to an extent. However, I was not able to get any footage of Mountain Rescue HQ in Snowdonia, as I was not allowed to do so. I replaced this with Mountain Rescue footage taken from YouTube. I then uploaded the production to YouTube.
